A Preppy Apartment on a Budget

This past week I put down a deposit on an apartment.  I have a lease and it’s all really exciting big kid stuff!  But now that I’ve signed the dotted line, I realize that I have a hard enough time making my bedroom (in my parents house) preppy, how am I going to decorate a preppy apartment on a budget?

DIY Lilly Pulitzer cork board

This specific cork board is painted, therefore only Lilly inspired… but if I were to make to DIY a cork board, I would buy UGotta Ragatta Lilly Pulitzer fabric and cover it!  I know my painting skills would leave a lot to be desired.

…and then I found nothing.

Quite rarely does Pinterest fall short, but searching for preppy decor on there left a lot to be desired!  I started thinking about decor I like instead. That’s right, these are out of Allison’s brain, NOT a search engine.

DIY Lilly Pulitzer Canopy

Lilly Pulitzer fabric is so pretty.. I would love to make a canopy over my bed of a loud pink and green print.  Just cut the fabric to the appropriate length and width, then tack it to the ceiling.  This would look best with a solid colored comforter.

Door Curtain

A simple fabric draped and pinned to the side of a closet door or bedroom door is so cute!  I know that these seem to be intended for little girl rooms (hence the pink teddy bear), but I don’t care.

For less than $20 on Amazon or Etsy, you can buy a wall monogram.   It adds a personalized touch to any plain white drab walls!  Mine is going right over my bed.

I just love it.  I love the chevron curtain, I love the clean cut bows.  It’s the cutest idea. Why buy hooks when you can have bows?

Take some wall paint and a ten dollar stamper from Joanne’s or Micheals and you can completely transform a room.  Seriously so excited for this. #nauticalfinatic

What ideas do you have for a preppy apartment on a budget?

A casual patriotic look, with a dash of nautical: FFB Clothing Review.

A few weeks ago, I stumbled upon Fabulous Finds Boutique on Instagram.  Once a prep discovers such an amazing store there is NO turning back.  Located in Fayetteville, NC I would LOVE to see the brick and morter store -but that’s a bit of a hike from NY even if the apparel is adorable.  This store was nice enough to show some southern hospitality and ship me a top.  Their e-tail site is a wonderful substitute for the real thing, and I recommend finding them on other forms of social media.  You’ll find yourself constantly in love with their products.  They have a wide array of tops, bottoms, dresses, and accessories at a variety of price points.  Quite honestly, the hardest part about ordering may be deciding what to pick.  Obviously, when given the opportunity to review such a fantastic brand, I didn’t hesitate.

This top is totally appropriate for a 4th of July cook out.  It ran larger than I anticipated, but works perfectly as a swimsuit cover up.  As you can see, there are deeper arm holes in this boyfriend style, but that’s what makes it even more perfect for layering with a lacy red or navy bandeau.  I plan on buying one ASAP.

You can find this top on the Fabulous Finds Boutique site here.  I am wearing a size Large, but probably could have gone with a medium… it depends the look you are going for.  One of the benefits to ordering a larger style is that during the cooler weather, I can wear this top ike a tunic, with a navy cardigan (Lord knows I have too many from working at Coach!), grey ponte pant leggings, and my favorite red satin ballet flats.

I love the way my “Red, Red, Red” Clinique lipstick brings out the red stripes in my shirt.  I am currently contemplating cutting up the sides of this top and tying them with red ribbons because I love the color so much! I would describe this top as being a casual patriotic look with a dash of nautical.  My make-up and bow headband dress it up a little more;  I also suggest adding pearls and wedges.

I was lucky enough to find a pair already in my wardrobe that look simply devine!  I don’t blame you at all if you mimic this 4th of July look.  Go for it!
