Things to do in Buffalo -April

In April I found a lot of great things to do in Buffalo. There were a variety of fundraisers for wonderful causes as well as new restaurants to try. A key part of this whole revitalization in the city includes the organizations that are making it all happen.. and seeing them operate up close is pretty neat.

I had the opportunity to get up closed and personal with Family and Child Services at “Fashion Show with a Twist” at Samuel’s Grande Manor in Williamsville on April 21st. Such a great experience!

The proceeds of the event went to support Haven House, Erie County’s only licensed domestic violence shelter. There were a variety of vendors present ranging from Mary Kay to LuLaroe as well as silent auctions and although I did not partake in the dinner, it looked delicious. This was the perfect opportunity to pick up some Mother’s Day gifts for mom as well as a few treats for yourself. There was a fashion show sponsored by Lord and Taylor at Walden Galleria, sporting all sorts of casual styles. Jess Lyons, blogger of Bows and Bouquets, attended this event with me.

The following evening I went to Statler City for the Unyts “Bucket List Bash” fundraiser with my friend Megan. It was so much fun and I don’t even think we got to do everything in the 3 hours we were there! The food was delicious. There were mini cupcakes courtesy of Baked -one of my favorites-, a mashed potato bar -SWOON-, pizza and wings -of course-, Wegman’s cheeses and spreads and delicious apps from the hotel. Can’t complain about an open bar with signature drinks in Unyts logo colors either 😉

When I wasn’t eating and drinking, you could find me spinning the roulette wheel, getting a ~henna~ tattoo and taking photos with local newscaster celebrities. This event was so much fun, I’m definitely going back next year.

The following week on April 28 I attended the Elle Blow Dry Bar and Niagara Distilling Company’s “Drink and Dry” event. This may or may not have been due to the delicious floral gin that I sampled at the bucket list bash.

Since I was flying out to Florida to visit Tess (my fantastic sidekick from my Disney trip last March!) the following day, getting a complimentary blow out seemed like even more of an incredible idea than usual. The Elle Blow Dry Bar team was up to the challenge of making my barrel curls stay over night. There were half priced cocktails, a Pure Romance vendor and plenty of chatty attendees. Jess, who went to the “Fashion Show with a Twist” with me, also attended this event. Check out her cute curls and baby bump :D!

When people complain about there being a lack of things to do in Buffalo, I am a firm believer that they are looking in the wrong places. In just 2 weeks I went to 3 fantastic events. Especially now that the weather is getting nicer there are a surplus of things to do in the Nickel City. What’s on your list for May?

Buffalo State Fashion Show 2016

Since moving to Buffalo almost 4 years ago I’ve attended a few fashion shows in Western New York. I love seeing fashion on display in our tight knit community and was thrilled to attend the afternoon showing of the Buffalo State Fashion Show: Ecolution on April 16.

My favorite part of the event was seeing how different each line was that the students created. It was not your traditional fashion show, despite the T style runway, judges -including Kirby Marzec, Accessories Editor at Teen Vogue- and seating arrangement.

There was something for everyone. The designs and materials were all over the board. Harsh and soft. Modest and provocative. Neutral and neon.

The models were both men and women, short and tall, had traditional long legged physiques and big beautiful figures. There was even a collection for 55-75 year old women. My biggest complaint about fashion in general is how excluding it can be. There are supposed rules and recommendations based on age, weight, body type, gender, etc… yet this show was all inclusive! With an eco focused show, embracing recycled materials, I wasn’t expecting such a progressive approach. It was quite a pleasant surprise.

My friend Natalie served as my honorary photographer at the Buffalo State Fashion Show. She helped me take behind the scene photos and gave me an alternative perspective when looking at the designs.

As the sole blogger of Clearing PREPPY‘s Name it should be no surprised that I paid close attention to the preppy trends at the show. There were many classic a-line dresses, pleated skirts and ruffled tops scattered throughout the collections.

I was drawn to the romantic looks too. I found it hard to believe some of these were made from scraps. Also as college students I can’t imagine their budgets were very large, yet these pieces truly looked high end.

These dresses were some of the most beautiful ones to photograph on the runway. They flowed wonderfully as the models walked.

If I was judging this show, first place would have had to go to the geometric themed line. I was so impressed. I felt like designer Megan Luongo’s senior capstone looks would flatter anyone’s body type and I would wear ALL of these separates and outfits. Everything looked so chic and retro, yet ready-to-wear and completely up to date with current trends -crop tops and high waisted pants/skirts yaaaaas- all at the same time. She described the collection as geometric and futuristic. I’m not sure what it really is about this look, but I wanted it all, from the gorgeous periwinkle color to the giant plastic button closures in back.

And can we please talk about this headband?! That’s just the hint of preppy that I was looking for.

Overall I would say the ninth annual Runway show at Buffalo State was a success. As college students that were learning about all of work that is involved in a fashion show (while on the job for the first time) they were still working out quite a few kinks at the afternoon show. I have faith that with time and practice they will continue to improve and I am already looking forward to Runway 10.0 in 2017.

Congratulations to all of the Fashion and Textile Technology students involved and thank you for bringing some more fashion to Western New York.

Depressing news and bright colored shoes

I jumped the gun.

I was overly confident and probably deserved the reality check that comes from not getting what you want.

Yesterday the verdict was in on the internship, and yesterday I did not consider what would happen if I didn’t like what I found out.

I did not get the internship.

I’m okay with it, but I will admit I was stunned.  I thought I might get the opportunity of rejecting it, not the other way around.

I am sure there were hundreds of girls with a similar reaction to mine. “The interviews went so well!” they would tell their mom’s, friends, and anyone within an earshot because they honestly did.

But if there aren’t hundreds of positions available, somebody obviously is not going to get the spots.

And this week that somebody was me.

I have accepted it and moved on.

After all, I am working really short weekend shifts and going to see a Fashion Show. I don’t have time to be down.

They’re giving awards to the most fashionable in the audience.. that’s a lot of pressure.

But bring it on, because I no longer have big decisions to focus on and the attire for a small town fashion show can take first priority.

Oh, well there are those projects I need to do. Really badly.

But I survived plenty of 3 am bedtimes at Canisius, I can pull them out for the next few weeks at home.

Since I now have a vacant summer, I am trying to think of all the vacations and concerts I need to go on/to.  I shouldn’t spend a ton because I actually have the ability to work and save… but ya know how that goes.

I have mentally already decided I want to go back down south again.  I will be trapped in a city forever, so I deserve some quality beach time.

I love how bright and lively it is on the beach.  I like the purple and black colors of my bedroom, except being on the lower bunk of queen sized beds I constantly feel like I am in a jail cell.

Just that.

It would probably help if the room had more windows, or if upstate New York believed in sunshine.

Whatever, I’ll have to make up for the depressing news with some cute shoes.
