The preppy DIY of the day

Lately I’ve been feeling crafty.  It could be the amount of free time I have on my hands, or the  amount of it that I’m spending with kids.. but whatever it is: I don’t hate it.

After Clementine’s vet appointment on Monday, I stopped at an antique shop.  Like second hand clothing, I am a definite fan of second hand furniture.  It tends to have a lot more character for a lot less money.  I was delighted to find a large gold mirror for $22 dollars.  I was even more delighted that my mother was willing to pay for it.

My mother also bought a cherry wood desk and chair off Craigslist the other day.  It was a great deal, even if it’s possibly laminate.  I could have used it (instead of my bed) quite frequently to do homework this past semester, but it’s a little too late for that.  Instead I plan on transforming the corner of my room with the desk into a vanity/make-up station.

Please ignore the piles, and admire the Audrey Hepburn posters instead.  I have a bit of rearranging to do with the wall decor, but where Audrey is currently holding her cigarette I would like to place the mirror, maybe a little lower.  I’m extremely OCD and color coordinated, so I wanted the mirror black instead of gold.

On second thought it would have still matched the desk’s metal furnishings, but when have I ever done anything easy?

After taping around the edge of the mirror (because God knows I would get black paint on it), I applied the first coat of black paint.  It worked as a primer.

Note: because the mirror was wood, I did not have to go to the trouble of sanding it.  Depending on the material and amount of paint layers you may have to.

Oh, and there’s a glimpse of my beautiful mother who helped with this project: Hi mom!!!

After the first coat of paint, the mirror still had a significant amount of gold shining through.  I also felt it looked streaky, so on to the next one.

Part of the reason I like this mirror so much is the victorian style detailing.  A second coat really helped to transform this piece, yet you can still see some of the gold accents.  I am undecided about whether this helps the piece look more antique-y or if I should use a skinny brush and go over the detailing a third time…

Would you be kind enough to help me decide?

Darlings!! I got the job at Coach, permanently.  It’s so exciting. I like knowing I will have somewhat glamorous dependable income.  Life is crazy and chaotic, but I expect nothing less.  I am a level 2 part timer, which means I work 15-22 hours per week.  I am yet to take the plunge and take advantage of my lovely employee discount, I think I deserve bonus points for that.  Not to say I’m not drooling over shimmery leather bags and signature infinity scarves.  I am saving my pennies for trips to Florida and New York CIty though. I need a change of scenery, I’m just taking online classes mainly after all. I have a pink shoe fund piggy bank, I should tape over that and put saving up for life… And Tory Burch flats. #sorrynotsorry

I know I’m the biggest traitor ever, but I want a Michael Kors Hamilton Bag too..  Curse my expensive taste! Hourly wage at Coach doesn’t support my desires.  One day.. when I’m a famous magazine writer you’ll see my black pumps with red soles walking away from those items I want now.  They’ll be so 2013.

My bag from Paris finally came, the maude and tilda one? I like it alot.. but I need to take back my bragging review.  The quality is pretty lame, and I could have had the clever quote screen printed in the USA for like 20 dollars.  I wish I hadn’t paid so much, but I am still happy I have it.  My mom dragged me in a thrift store with her, and wearing a bag that says “Not comfortable prancing around with my Chanel bag” was a hoot.

It wasn’t one of those cute trendy second hand boutiques either.

I’m indulging in wayyyyy too much TV time lately.  The Hills and The Carrie Diaries are my FAV pass times.  I feel fashion inspired with nowhere to wear it.  I am newly obsessed with Lauren Conrad and Whitney Port.  I missed that oh so 2007 phase of the show because my parents banished MTV from my house.  I know the show is fake, please don’t ruin anything more of it for me!  Carrie on the other hand is definitely going to inspire my need to watch Sex and the City after this.  I adore living through these TV shows.  I was talking to one of my long distance best friends about fickle friends and I referred to Lauren Conrad as my very picky best friend. Kinda wish I was kidding.

The girls on these shows TOTALLY drive my desire to look supurb by spring break.  They’re ridiculously fit.  I have lost 12 pounds since I left Canisius though so they are a positive influence! Aerobics KILLS my ass, but its going to be one perky rear end when I’m done with it.  Bowling starts at the end of February, and although it’s not exherting that much energy it has more impact that I do lounging on my lovely bedding in my BEA-UTIFUL re-fabbed room!

Well technically it’s jenna’s and mine.  Just picture marilyn and audrey up there. MMMMM. Vintage and modern heaven. I cannot wait to get a desk and vanity in there.  It’s going to be so victorian chic.  Those style icons with gorgeous bone structure with also influence the lifestyle change occurring now.

I NEED TO INVEST IN A PEDOMETER TO WEAR AROUND COACH. I get freaking shin splints and swear I walk miles over an 8 hour shift in that tiny store.  I need comfier shoes.. I adore my British Tan riding boots, don’t get me wrong… I just think leather flats would be more appropriate.

I ditched the button down already. Starched and pressed collars are too much work.

Dear Lord, I sound like such a lazy prep.. I’m going on Forever 21 right now to buy fake pearls. #judgeme

I like big books and I cannot lie

Helllloooooo!

I’m back to the land of wifi and empty rooms scattered with boxes! I cannot believe I move in 4 days… and then go to college 2 days later.

It’s honestly horrifying.

I’ve packed up most of my belongings at this point, I know that half of the ones I want to college will not get there safely. Its a fact I still haven’t come to terms with.. but I know our history of packing things and I have like 15 bins of clothes.

I wish I was exaggerating.

The walls that once held Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn posters are empty, leaving behind the permanent laminated quote:

When it comes down to it, I let them think what they want. If they care enough to bother with what I do, then I am already better than them.

Those words got me through high school, what quote will get me through college?

I wish I could take the quote with me, but it refuses to peel. Ignore the messy bed, and terrible lighting but I think you get the state of my room currently. Obviously it typically looks better than this. I couldn’t live fashionably in a room that dull.

My newest concerns besides anxiety attacks because my life is packed up in boxes, are the fact that I cannot figure out how all of this is going to fit in a dorm with another girl that adores clothing possibly more than I do.

Craziness.

And this sharing a bathroom with a whole hall thing? It’s gonna suck. I know I’ve complained before.. but now that the rug is being ripped out from under me and I’m losing the comfort zone of my bedroom (one of the only nice places in this town) as well as a bathroom to get ready in.

I’m very annoyed.

OH AND MY BEST FRIEND IS CAMPING.

Why does she think she can do that? Have a life I mean?

The only thing getting me through this time of urgency are nerd quotes (hence the title), wanelo, and pinterest.

I really want to buy this bag with that quote on it through etsy. I got the okay to start shipping purchases to my dorm (cuz I don’t have a living place after wednesday and I’m not paying premium) and I feel like abusing the privilege asap.

I keep painting my nails and shopping online too.

Don’t worry, some things never change </3
